“All of us have suffered on our journey”
A cradle-to-grave biography of a fascinating woman, The Testament of Ann Lee approaches its mysterious subject with the utmost sincerity framed in daring formal choices. Mona Fastvold (screenwriter of The Brutalist) taps into the language of musical theatre and Shaker spirituals to create a semi-imagined portrait of the mysterious Ann (Amanda Seyfried in a career-defining performance) and her devout followers, tracking their journey across the Atlantic from the sordid poverty of mid-18th-century Manchester to the open and dangerous New World in search of religious freedom.
“Inspired...a transcendent cinematic vision you can dance to”
“Genuinely remarkable ”
“A one-of-a-kind cinematic experience...see it on the big screen, if you can”
Fastvold (working once again with creative partner Brady Corbet) takes the biggest of swings in making The Testament of Ann Lee a musical, fortunately backed up by a divinely embodied performance from her lead—this is a long way from Mama Mia!—but Seyfried approaches the character with a fervour that convinces in every scene. Fastvold wisely sticks close to the charismatic yet unknowable Ann as she leads her followers further and further off the map, allowing Celia Rowlson-Hall's inspired choreography to convey the agony and ecstasy of their journey.
