“Give yourself away like the sea”
A sensitive and sensual film about transitional phases in life, Y tu mamá también thrums with vibrancy underlaid with profound sadness. Julio (Gabriel Garcia Bernal) and Tenoch (Diego Luna) are teenagers living in Mexico City, each from vastly different social classes. At a family wedding, they are drawn to Luisa (Maribel Verdu), a beautiful older Spanish woman who they are desperate to impress- bragging about a secret beach called Boca del Cielo, which they claim to know the location of. After receiving some devastating news, Luisa impulsively calls their bluff and the trio embark on a road trip to find the secret beach, a journey that will reveal the stark social realities of Mexico and uncomfortable truths about themselves.
Confusingly marketed abroad as a "teen sex comedy" in the vein of American Pie, Alfonso Cuarón's raw and affecting romantic drama broke Mexican box office records and shot Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna to stardom. Shot by legendary DOP Emmanuel Lubezki (The Revenant, Children of Men) in a semi-verité style, the film's frank exploration of taboo themes and authentic emotion feel startlingly intimate. Part character study and part social realism, Y tu mamá también manages a delicate balance of humour and pathos that lingers.
