Overview

Charismatic duo Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and Sundance (Robert Redford) are the leaders of a band of daring outlaws in the Old West. As the country gradually becomes more civilised – and they rob one too many trains – they find themselves on the run from a special posse paid to hunt them down. Together with Sundance’s lover Etta Place (Katharine Ross), the pair hatch a plan to flee to Bolivia – initiating a thrilling tale of fast-draws, friendship, bank robberies and torrid love affairs as they make their way through vertiginous canyons and sweeping plains in pursuit of freedom.

Why See This Film

Winner of four Academy Awards, revolutionary anti-Western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid combined an unforeseen smorgasbord of talent in crafting its timeless charm. From its screenplay by William Goldman to its music by Burt Bacharach – including the iconic “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” – to its direction by George Roy Hill (The Sting), this note-perfect film is both steeped in nostalgia and centred upon a trio of decidedly modern anti-heroes who you just can’t help but adore. It also happens to be the film debut of Sam Elliott, who would go on to wed co-star Katharine Ross a few decades later.
