Overview

After being released from a mental hospital, naive Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhall) takes on a secretary role for a demanding attorney named E. Edward Grey (James Spader)––no doubt an E.L James inspiration. As she tries out a conventional, lukewarm relationship with her friend Peter (Jeremy Davies), Lee finds herself craving her boss and before long a BDSM relationship flourishes, threatened only by Grey’s insecurities and her conservative family.

Why You Should See This Film

Hot, funny, camp and sweetly romantic, the Sundance Jury Prize winning Secretary straddles the kink romcom balancing act perfectly; giving a refreshingly positive look into the sub / dom dynamic. As James Spader shines with an otherworldly perverse energy, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Golden Globe nominated performance is sensational, transformative and infectious. To top it off, Angelo Badalementi (Twin Peaks) delivers one of his most underrated film scores.
