NEW 4K RESTORATION PRESENTED WITH MIYA MIYA FILM CLUB

Overview

The masterpiece that garnered filmmaker Youssef Chahine his international reputation, Cairo Station (originally titled The Iron Door) follows Qinawi (Chahine himself), a man, shunned for his mild disability, hired to sell newspapers. His affections grow for a beautiful cold-drinks vendor, Hannuma (Hind Rostom, the “Marilyn Monroe of Arabia”), but she rejects his advances; her love lies with Abu Siri (Farid Shawqi), a respected porter struggling to unionise his fellow workers. Qinawi doesn’t take the rejection well and his obsession turns to a murderous impulse.

Why You Should See This Film

One of the most influential and celebrated works of Arab cinema, Cairo Station now looks better than ever thanks to a recent 4K restoration. Mixing film noir conventions with neorealist sensibilities, Chahine crafts not only a darn good picture – rich with sociopolitical critique on class, sexual repression, gender violence and workers’ rights – but an extraordinary pedestrian glimpse of post-revolutionary Egyptian life in the ‘50s.
