“Ithaca’s king is coming back”
Christopher Nolan embarks on another ambitious epic with his adaptation of Homer's classic saga, finding the humanity among grand spectacle in The Odyssey. After more than a decade away from his home of Ithica fighting the Trojan War for Agamemnon (Benny Safdie), the warrior-king Odysseus (Matt Damon) and his men undertake a perilous return journey by sea, encountering gods and monsters at every turn. Meanwhile, his Queen Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland) must defend Ithica's throne against would-be usurpers.
“Jaw-dropping”
“Monumental...unabashed showmanship”
“Arguably Nolan’s best work”
Adapting The Odyssey may be one of the smartest moves the Oppenheimer director has ever made, allowing him to combine his most personal themes of guilt and loss with bravura filmmaking technique on a monumental scale. Aside from the visual splendour and extraordinary set pieces, it delivers a locked-in cast of Nolan faves (Robert Pattinson in a standout role as the conniving suitor Antinous) and new collaborators like Academy Award-winner Lupita Nyong’o.
