“I'm a fiend for mojitos”
Michael Mann’s extremely 2006 reimagining of his 80’s career cornerstone TV series, Miami Vice sees Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as undercover MDPD detectives James "Sonny" Crockett and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs. After a string of undercover agents are found dead, Sonny and Rico pose as drug smugglers to infiltrate a Colombian cartel and paramilitary group run by a certain José Yero (John Ortiz). As mojito fiend Crockett strikes up a secret romance with Yero’s advisor Isabella (Gong Li), Tubbs fears for their cover as they delve deeper into the drug trafficking empire.
Cited by Harmony Korine as an inspiration on Spring Breakers, Miami Vice is a sprawling mood piece of sex, drugs and post rock ‘n’ roll – featuring tracks from Audioslave, Mogwai, Nonpoint and an iconic collaboration between Jay-Z and Linkin Park. Accruing a cult following and critical reappraisal for its grainy deep-focus digital cinematography, atmospheric sense of place and supreme style, Michael Mann’s action-packed meditation begs to be revisited.
