A deftly woven tale by Kon Ichikawa (The Burmese Harp, An Actor's Revenge), using compelling mystery to explore a post-war Japan of tradition turned upside-down. Around 1947 in the picturesque Nagano region, the wealthy Inugami patriarch has shocked his clan by leaving the entire fortune to outsider Tamayo (Yoko Shimada)- on the condition that she marry one of three grandsons. When family members start showing up dead in highly unnatural ways, travelling detective Kosuke Kindaichi (Kōji Ishizaka) must untangle generations of treachery and deceit to find a killer.
Based on Seishi Yokomizo 1951 novel, this is the first—and best—in a multi-film collaboration between Ichikawa and Ishizaka featuring the hugely popular detective Kosuke Kindaichi. The director is better known for his dramas and award-winning Tokyo Olympiad documentary, which is part of what makes The Inugami Family so special: this incredibly complex mystery unwinds with clockwork precision, leaving room for wholly convincing characterisation and startling images that will stick in the mind.
