“Hands off, sir”
Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2021, Titane sees Raw director Julia Ducournau deliver another high-octane shock to the senses. A transgressive, jaw-dropping body-horror vision, Titane follows Alexia (Agathe Rousselle), who lives with an unusual souvenir from a childhood car crash: a titanium plate in her skull. Now an adult, she shares a deep, bodily connection with cars, working as an exotic dancer at motor shows. When a man harrasses her in the parking lot and swiftly meets his untimely end, Alexia heads on a dizzying spree of violence, sex and self-discovery.
It was a joy to see Cannes Jury President Spike Lee award Julia Ducournau one of cinema’s highest prizes for her audacious second feature. Besides Jane Campion, she is one of only two female directors to claim this honour. With echoes of David Cronenberg, Titane is also very much its own beast, best experienced in shared amazement with a revved-up crowd.
