“They’re all going to laugh at you!”
Carrie (Sissy Spacek) is a meek 17 year old girl, bullied by the extroverts that surround her in class and even moreso at home by her fanatically religious mother Margaret (Piper Laurie, at here best). When she gets her first period in the school locker room and is teased mercilessly by her peers, something is unleashed within her. Back home, Margaret tells Carrie that her puberty is a sign of evil, and punishes her. Carrie's telekinetic powers grow as her abuse from all fronts continues, and when she's involved in a mean trick at prom, she can't hold her power in any longer...
The opening locker room scene alone is worth it – it's like Mean Girls x 10000000. Artfully directed by Brian de Palma and based on a novel by Stephen King (as, let's face it, all good horror movies are), Carrie is more than just a modern horror classic, worthy of being referenced across pop culture for all time. Spacek's pale, otherworldly appearance is brilliantly utilised here as a girl on the verge.
