Overview

We’re excited to present the Australian premiere of the new restoration of The Taste of Tea, a sweet, surreal smattering of moments in the countryside lives of the Haruno family. As hypnotherapist Nobuo (Tomokazu Miura) teaches his son Hajime (Takahiro Sato) Go, the teenager has tough time with crushes and puberty. Meanwhile, Yoshiko (Satomi Tezuka) rejects the role of housewife by working on her animation project with grandfather Akira (Tatsuya Gashuin). And as uncle Ayano (Tadanobu Asano), a groovy music producer, deals with ghosts of the past, eight-year-old Sachiko (Maya Banno) looks for ways to be rid of her giant doppelganger.

Why See This Film

Katsuhito Ishii’s (Funky Forest – also known for his animated work on Kill Bill) bucolic family anthology is a zany, hilarious and beautifully crafted gem of millennium Japanese cinema. Inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander, this film similarly deals in familial dynamics and the everyday ennui of country living, but from here Ishii unleashes an endlessly creative deluge of gleeful daydream escapes; anime asides, musical numbers, slapstick gags, kaleidoscopic trips and all kinds of wonderment. While some have drawn comparisons to the combined works of Obayashi, Kitano, Suzuki and Ozu, The Taste of Tea is truly unlike anything else you’ve ever seen.
