Overview

The international breakthrough film of co-directing duo Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, Delicatessen is a wickedly dark comedy centred around a dilapidated apartment building over a butcher's shop- the owner of which, Monsieur Clapet, has inventive ways of procuring fresh meat. A new tenant/maintenance man—unemployed circus clown Louison (Dominique Pinon)—causes chaos when Mademoiselle Planet falls in love with him, and unites with an underground gang of vegetarians to save Louison from her father's chopping block.

Why You Should See This Film

Meaner, hornier and (for our money) funnier than the beloved Amelie, but just as beautiful and inventive as anything Jeunet has made. Drawing from inspirations like Brassaï's Paris by Night, the poetic realism of Marcel Carné and the gonzo world of Métal Hurlant comic anthologies, Delicatessen balances its grotesqueries with affecting tenderness.
