“If you do this, there's no undoing it”
Spielberg is back in his cosmic and mystical mode with the epic thriller Disclosure Day. Cybersecurity expert-turned-whistleblower Daniel (Josh O’Connor) is on the run from the shadowy agents of a private company, desperately trying to protect his girlfriend Jane (Eve Hewson) and stolen data proving contact with extraterrestrial life. Meanwhile, weather reporter Margaret (Emily Blunt) has gained strange and disturbing powers seemingly connected to childhood experiences shared by her and Daniel, as they are inexorably drawn to each other on a cross-country pursuit.
“A cracking good thriller”
“Fragile, luminous, and deeply moving”
“Morally and thematically complex while entertaining the hell out of you”
One for the Close Encounters and E.T. fans, Disclosure Day once again sees Spielberg trying to reckon with the decades of lore and mythos around "alien" encounters in America, digging through obfuscation and conspiracy for a chance at something awe-inspiring. For all the high aims, where this really excels is in thrilling cat-and-mouse games across the Midwest and performances that find the humanity in our smallness— most impressively from Emily Blunt, with what may just be a career-best turn.
