“Ask her who she loves more”
Johnathan Glazer's uncanny and unblinking mystery Birth is a marvel of suspense with a career-best performance from Nicole Kidman. After spending several years in mourning, Anna (Kidman) is on the verge of marrying her fiancee, when a ten-year-old boy (Cameron Bright) arrives claiming to be the reincarnation of her deceased first husband Sean. Despite the preposterous claim, his knowledge of her most private secrets makes Anna begin to wonder, grappling with the troubling implications and a now-uncertain future.
Set in a wintery Upper East Side of tastefully tomb-like apartments, Birth has echoes of Rosemary's Baby in its secrecy and general pall of deceit but veers away from horror into something almost transcendent. Glazer (The Zone of Interest) worked with DOPHarris Savides (Zodiac, Elephant) to create a film of great precision and beauty, even as Kidman falls apart at its centre.
