Overview

A classic rags-to-riches story, kinda. Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) winds up in Las Vegas and meets sharp-talking Cristal Connors (Gina Gershon). After an eventful first impression, Nomi sets her sights on Cristal's boyfriend Zack (Kyle MacLachlan)- and her spot as star of the Stardust Casino's topless extravaganza. There’s a lot of nudity, a lot of ‘dancing’, a lot of bitchy one-liners, a lot of nipple talk, drugs, jail, feather boas, and trips down the stairs.

Audience Note: This film contains depiction of sexual assault

Why See This Film

Misunderstood upon release, Showgirls has enjoyed a critical reappraisal in cinephile communities in recent years, from featuring in Mia Hansen-Løve’s 2016 film Eden to being the subject of books such as Adam Nayman’s It Doesn't Suck and the 2019 documentary You Don’t Nomi. If you ask us, it’s a slyly satirical jolt of high-octane fun, and has more to say about modern America than its glittery surface may suggest.
