Overview

Rooted in true family history, Wolfram is a vast, atmospheric outback western from director Warwick Thornton that returns to the characters and colonial frontier of his acclaimed 2017 film Sweet Country. When two swaggering outlaws (Erroll Shand and Joe Bird) roll into town to strike it rich in the wolfram (tungsten) mines, they unleash a wave of cruelty that shatters the community’s fragile balance. Suddenly free from their white masters, three irrepressible First Nations kids, including Philomac (Pedrea Jackson), set off across the countryside in search of a safe home – the outlaws in close pursuit.

“An uncomfortable, powerful watch. Cementing Warwick Thornton’s status as one of our foremost directors. A master storyteller”

The Australian

“Fiercely original... a new modern classic”

Deadline

“A deeply embodied work. Deborah Mailman’s near silent performance speaks multitudes, and the child actors are irresistible”

The Curb

“Warwick Thornton has a feel for the Central Australian desert and the craggy MacDonnell Ranges that’s both epic and intimate”

The Hollywood Reporter

Why See This Film

We’re always excited for a new film from Warwick Thornton, one of Australia's strongest cinematic voices, who again applies his talents as director and cinematographer to glimpse the red centre and its dark histories. Bolstered by a stunning cast, with special mention of Deborah Mailman quiet, wounded yet powerfully enduring turn, Wolfram is gripping, menacing and deeply emotional; a tale of survival that faces our country’s ugly colonial history head on with tact, humour and hope.
