“Humans are such easy prey”
Based on the short story by H.P Lovecraft, From Beyond opens with the creation of the Resonator; a powerful machine that allows the human mind to see creatures and worlds beyond our observable reality. Naturally, the machine malfunctions, kills its creator, Dr. Edward Pretorius (Ted Sorel), and causes his partner Dr. Crawford Tillinghast (Jeffrey Combs) to lose his mind. Intrigued by Crawford’s mad ramblings, psychiatrist Katherine McMichaels (Barbra Crampton) returns to the Resonator to continue the experiment and find out if Pretorius is truly dead or trying to make contact FROM BEYOND!
From the gleefully gruesome minds of Stuart Gordon (Dolls) and Brian Yunza (Society), comes their second Lovecraft adaptation (the first being the cult classic Re-Animator). Though their previous outing was darkly comedic, From Beyond is laser focused on a mix of psychological terror and full-on body horror, all while being drenched in stunning neon lights. Gordon achieves typically glorious performances from some of his favourite character actors, but the film belongs to Crampton as the rarely glimpsed girlypop scientist turned maniac.
