The jewel in American Imperialist auteur Tony Scott's crown (RIP), Top Gun is a perfect synthesis of propaganda and action filmmaking, screening in its 40th anniversary year. Tom Cruise is Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in the role that launched him to superstardom- a cocky young naval aviator who works alongside wingman Goose (Anthony Edwards) and rival trainee Iceman (Val Kilmer) to challenge Soviet MiG-28s in their airspace and play volleyball.
