Overview

Legendary genre auteur Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer) takes on early 00s "J-Horror" framework with a singularly nasty and evil spirit in One Missed Call. A group of young people are having their flip phones menaced with voicemail messages from themselves- playing out the sound of their own future violent deaths. Yumi (Ko Shibasaki) realises her friends are being targeted by a supernatural entity, and joins forces with detective Hiroshi (Shinichi Tsutsumi) to try and unravel the mystery before it claims all their lives.

Why See This Film

Forget the American remake, Takashi Miike’s One Missed Call is a singularly gnarly take on the "what if a ___ was evil" horror motif. In these phone reliant times it's easy to forget there was an era when anyone questioned their ubiquity, let alone the creeping terror they inflicted, but Miike was front and centre with this cruel little riff on a classic premise that goes completely unhinged in the second act.
