Ten years on, Olivier Assayas’ mysterious, mesmerising and utterly unclassifiable film Personal Shopper remains a moody enigma of a film. Kristen Stewart stars as Maureen, a young American woman living in Paris who works as the titular personal shopper for a demanding but little-seen celebrity named Kyra. As she runs about the city picking up clothes she’s not allowed to wear, Maureen remains haunted by the death of her twin brother. Both affected by the same genetic heart problem, they made a pact in life to contact the other should one of them leave the earthly world first.

An intimate character study, a meditation on grief, an alienating city portrait and an exceptionally spooky ghost story (ectoplasm and all); Personal Shopper is a complex mix of genres and modes that, we reckon, unite to enthralling effect. Booed at its first Cannes screening, then awarded a four-and-a-half minute ovation on its official premiere, scoring a Best Director award, Personal Shopper was divisive on release and we think its high time for a second run to re-approach and unravel its secrets while basking in one of Kristen Stewart’s most luminous performances – particularly in time for directorial debut, The Chronology of Water.
