Directed by the dream team of Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen), City of Lost Children is a remarkably visually imaginative, utterly unique, kid-and-adult-friendly adventure film. Ron Perlman stars as One, a carnival strongman whose adopted little brother Denree has gone missing— taken by Krank (Daniel Emilfork), a crazed scientist that kidnaps children to harvest their dreams, since Krank is unable to have any of his own. One sets out to rescue his brother with the help of Miette (Judith Vittet), who is part of a group of orphan thieves. Along the way, an amnesiac diver, a circus performer, prosthetic eyes, a gaggle of cloned henchmen (Dominique Pinon), a mind control device, and more run riot through a dreamscape of imagery and archetypes from French culture and cinema history.
Terry Gilliam praised City of Lost Children upon its release and its easy to see why he 'd love it. Both this and Gilliam’s cult classic Brazil belong to a Jules Verne retro-futurist sensibility that has a flavour all its own: labyrinthine, cluttered, dystopian hoarder-core with an industrial twist (it's not steampunk! It's not!!!). Caro and Jenuet brought along the design and production crew that made their previous cult hit Delicatessen sing, including DOP Darius Khondji plus some top-tier new additions like Angelo Badalamenti (composer forTwin Peaks, Blue Velvet) and superstar costumer Jean-Paul Gaultier, who was so committed to the aesthetic he paid for the unconventional materials and fabrics himself. A labour of love from all on board, City of Lost Children is a transportive adventure to a world you'll want to stay in.
