Overview

After a brief chance encounter, unassuming mechanic Vahid (Vahid Mobasseri) kidnaps a man he strongly suspects to be his former prison tormentor. The revenge plan is going smoothly until doubt creeps in: what if he nabbed the wrong guy? To verify the identity of the man tied up in the back of his van, Vahid gathers several former prisoners, all abused by that same captor, but each has their own idea about who he is and what should happen next.

Why See This Film

Winner of the Palme D’Or and nominated for two Academy Awards, this tense yet well-humoured moral thriller is easily one of our favourite films of 2025. Filmed in secret after director Jafar Panahi’s time in Iranian detention, which only came to an end when he committed to a hunger strike, It Was Just An Accident combines exceptional craft and a stellar cast to astutely examine the Iranian people’s trauma, their ongoing relation to the regime, and what comes next for a society of abusers and victims living side by side.
