The Most Terrible Time in My Life

(Unclassified 15+)

Overview

Masatoshi Nagase (Mystery Train, The Box Man) is Maiku Hama, a hard-boiled, high-spirited private detective working out of the second floor of an old Yokohama picture house, saving up enough to send his little sister to college. In this first installment of the Maiku Hama trilogy, our sly underdog finds himself embroiled in the plight of two Taiwanese brothers whose long-awaited reunion is key to an impending war between underground pan-Asian mafia groups.

We’re pleased to present the Australian premiere of the new 4K restoration of The Most Terrible Time in My Life.

Why See This Film

Director Kaizo Hayashi opens this `60s noir pastiche with the rich monochrome and stark set design of a Seijun Suzuki Nikkatsu actioner (complete with a Joe Shishido cameo) along with the endearing quirks, charms and colourful cast of a long-running serial. The Most Terrible Time in My Life (one of the best titles ever, by the way) elevates its pulp plots with many shades of intrigue and heart in a tale of immigrant communities surviving in Yokohama. And of course, Masatoshi Nagase is unforgettable as our rough, noble and exceptionally dressed sleuth; a personality you’ll be instantly adopting by the end credits.
