“Right off the bat, they're gonna ask for an encore”
Seventeen years in the making, Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie follows up Matt Johnson (BlackBerry, Operation Avalanche, The Dirties) and Jay McCarrol’s side-splitting, copyright-dodging web / TV series with a blast to the past. When their latest highly convoluted and extremely dangerous plan to get a show at the Rivoli (a local Toronto music venue) backfires, Matt and Jay, also known as “Nirvanna the Band”, find themselves flung back in time to the year 2008. While Matt searches for a way to get back to the present day, Jay wonders if things could’ve gone differently for him.
Winner: Audience Choice Award
“It’s movies like these that prove that cinema still has the capacity to surprise, even in criminally goofy comedies like this.”
“A furiously funny roller coaster of a film whose energy never, ever dips. It is difficult to imagine a better, sharper comedy coming along this year. Or the next.”
“Making dumb seem clever, and clever seem silly, Matt Johnson and company take their mockumentary shtick to new and dizzying heights, literally”
Fans of Matt and Jay’s antics already know this is a must-see, it’s also a perfect introduction for those discovering the Canuck comedy duo, their very silly humour and devilishly clever DIY filmmaking (it’s certain to be your kind of thing if you also enjoy Nathan for You and How To with John Wilson). Reflexively visiting their own past and the history of pop culture, leaning into tired tropes to hilarious effect and concocting some truly remarkable ‘how-did-they-do-that?’ stunts and trickery; this might be Matt and Jay’s finest work yet.
