Overview

Winner of the Berlin Golden Bear and one of Sight & Sounds director's choices for Greatest Films of All Time, Wild Strawberries is Bergman at his most humane and touching. Professor Isak Borg (Victor Sjöström, director of The Phantom Carriage) is a man at the end of his life, looking back on achievements made and opportunities lost. While travelling to accept a prestigious award he encounters family, friends and strangers who spur a reflection on his past through dreams, nightmares and vivid sense-memories. His journey takes him through despair and regret as he wonders what might have been and gradually works to reach a place of acceptance.

Why See This Film

Named by numerous directors (Scorsese, Kubrick and Tarkovsky are just a few) as one of their favourites, Wild Strawberries is a tremendously moving portrait of a man searching for joy at the end of a life spent keeping it at arm's length. In what was to be his final performance Victor Sjöström imbues the flawed Professor with the full scope of human frailties and dignity, supported by Bergman regulars Bibbi Anderson and Ingrid Thulin in portraying the range of experiences throughout youth and old age. Bergman wrote this film during a period of immense turbulence in his personal life yet it remains one of his most hopeful, a sincere wish to find what was good and hold on to it to the end.
