AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE OF THE NEW 4K RESTORATION

Overview

Maiku Hama (Masatoshi Nagase – Mystery Train, The Box Man) returns in full colour in the second entry of Kaizo Hayashi’s neo-noir trilogy. Work is slow for our noble private eye: with his convertible has been repossessed, Maiku is forced to take odd jobs and search for missing dogs. Soon enough though, the distant past catches up with the investigator: a famed exotic dancer who shares history with Hama returns to Yokohama while the cops come to our desperate hero looking for leads on a deadly gang by the harbour and their mysterious leader ‘The White Man’.

We’re pleased to present the Australian premiere of the new 4K restoration of The Stairway to the Distant Past.

Why See This Film

Kaizo Hayashi’s follow up to his monochrome marvel The Most Terrible Time in My Life is bursting with the kind of colour and grittiness of a Kinji Fukasaku film, with the surreal setpieces of Seijun Suzuki’s Tokyo Drifter, plus all the charm we’ve already come to know and love from this irresistible ensemble. Dialing up the action, digging deeper into backstories and confronting Maiku Hama with his most difficult challenges yet, this entry also investigates the not too distant history of Yokohama and confronts the intergenerational scars it still harbours.
