Overview

If you liked the The Colour of Pomegranates, then we can’t recommend this enough. Firmly rejecting a Russian dub and the Soviet Realism he had hitherto worked in, with Shadows of the Forgotten Ancestors Parajanov’s unmistakable style began to come into its own; exploring and embracing Ukrainian Hutsul folk culture and history in their own language. While his later style is characterised by highly-constructed tableaux, here Parajanov’s camera hurtles freely across the Carpathian landscape to the tune of an aching Romero and Juliet style romance.
