Showing Exclusively at Golden Age in Sydney
Visions du Réel–selected Time and Tide is a hybrid documentary by China-born/Naarm-based writer and director Vee Shi. After his aging father suffers a stroke Vee makes the journey to Longtian, the rural community he left at age thirteen, to help care for him. Old wounds are opened as estranged family members band together, trying to fulfil their duty to a stubborn man who has often treated them poorly.
Winner: Documentary Australia Award
“This transcendent work delivered raw and authentic emotion, demonstrating the capacity of filmmaking not only to capture a process of healing, but also to create the conditions for it”
“A miracle of close documentary filmmaking”
Shooting Time and Tide with a minimal crew, Vee has created a deeply intimate and affecting family portrait. Struggling to reconcile the expectations of a generation who lived through the Cultural Revolution with contemporary individualism, he reflects on their journey with humour and impressive candour.
Winner of the Documentary Australia Award at Sydney Film Festival 2026, Time and Tide played to sold out sessions at this years MIFF and is screening in Sydney exclusively at Golden Age.
