Overview
The final artwork and performance from the 60-odd years of her artistic life, Broken English examines the many faces of icon Marianne Faithfull: from teen sensation and tabloid fodder to acclaimed musician, through addiction and tragedy. Set within a stylised Brazil-esque "Ministry of Not Forgetting", Faithfull is interviewed by agents (Tilda Swinton, George MacKay) who allow her, in her own words at last, to describe the highs and lows of an extraordinary life.

In a radical departure from the talking-head documentary format, Broken English directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard (20,000 Days on Earth) have assembled a fittingly inventive tribute to this singular artist. Between recollections and frank discussion of Faithfull's treatment by the British music press, the film is studded with renditions of her music from Beth Orton, Courtney Love, Nick Cave and Suki Waterhouse- along with, hauntingly, her own final recorded performance.
