Overview

In this entry of Dag Johan Haugerud’s Oslo Trilogy, two chimney sweeps, both happy in their monogamous heterosexual marriages, share stories that have recently challenged their ideas of sexuality and masculinity. One (Thorbjørn Harr) is disturbed by a dream where he is gazed upon with desire, as if he were a woman, by a divine David Bowie figure. The other sweep (Jan Gunnar Røise) has a spur of the moment sexual encounter with another man but does not consider himself gay or unfaithful.

“One of the most bold and unflinching deconstructions of masculinity we have seen in years”

International Cinephile Society

“Low-key humour and refreshing candour... a smart movie with a lot on its mind”

The Hollywood Reporter

“A tender examination of male vulnerability”

Why You Should See This Film

Contrary to what the title might suggest, Sex (Dreams, Love) is much more interested in chatting about masculinity, sexuality, gender norms and self discovery, and watching characters process their feelings about these matters, than showing anything explicit. Together with a wry, charming and refreshingly unguarded cast, rendered in gentle, warm hues, accompanied by Peder Capjon Kjellsby’s emotive jazz fusion score, and a transcendent finale, Dag Johan Haugerud again manages to steer the conversation with empathy and curiosity toward the deeper truths of life, the self and the connections we make.
