One of Éric Rohmer’s most delightful tales of friendship, Four Adventures of Reinette Mirabelle unites a dreamy country-girl and modern Parisian in an episodic quartet of exciting escapades and moral conundrums. After meeting by chance on a deserted country road, local aspiring artist Reinette (Joëlle Miquel) and holidaying ethnology student Mirabelle (Jessica Forde) get on fast and before long decide to move into a small apartment together in Paris. From the tranquillity of the countryside to the chaos of the big city, the two are faced with sublime natural phenomena and plagued by draconian shopkeepers, street swindlers and slimy art dealers, spurring ethical tension and philosophical discussion between the pair.
A progenitor to Greta Gerwig’s Frances Ha, Éric Rohmer’s criminally overlooked gem Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle features one of our favourite portrayals of female friendship on screen – one could listen to these two naively and cynically discuss nature, money, social justice and the ways we interact for hours (and Rohmer only gives us 99 minutes). Markedly different to Rohmer’s other stories of romance, this sweet and sharp hang-out film is more interested in these two young women, their personal philosophies and their gleeful chemistry.
