Overview
An intimate love letter to the power of music and the written word, winner of a special jury award at SXSW, Matty Wishnow’s The Last Critic tells the story of Robert Christgau, the self-styled “dean of American rock critics.” As music editor of New York’s Village Voice for decades, Christgau almost single-handedly invented rock criticism as we know it. His pithy putdowns of hated albums became legendary, but his love of music poured off the page and his eclectic, open-minded taste shaped generations of fans and musicians.

First Films, founded in 2022, is a film festival dedicated to introducing Sydney audiences to new daring debut films never screened in Sydney before. Beginning in 2024, the festival also started showcasing significant retrospective debuts. First Films aims to challenge, inspire, and entertain. Now celebrating its fifth edition, First Films will take place in 2026, October 27th to November 1st at Golden Age Cinema & Bar and Sydney Opera House.
