“Which side are you on? Stalin or Mickey Mouse?”
Sandra Hüller and Hans Zischler star in Fatherland, the acclaimed new drama from Polish writer/director Paweł Pawlikowski (Ida). In 1949 author and Nobel laureate Thomas Mann (Zischler) has returned to the German homeland he fled escaping Nazi persecution, accompanied by adult daughter Erika (Hüller), to receive a literary award. Amidst the chaos of a promotional tour spanning the US-controlled West and communist East the pair discover that the Germany they left no longer exists, replaced by a haunted landscape of political unrest and paranoia that mirrors the growing discord in their own family.
“Another expansive, enriching work from a modern master”
“Suffused with its characters’ longing”
“Elegant, engrossing”
A portrait of complex people in complicated times, Fatherland is the third film in Cold War director Pawlikowski's triptych exploring the cultural clashes of postwar Europe, highlighting his remarkable economy of style and featuring another razor-sharp performance from Hüller. Zischler likewise commands the screen as a man whose emotions are roiling beneath a repressed exterior, attempting to make sense of a world that no longer has a place for him.
