Overview
Charming and filled with extremely 90s energy, Hackers is a nostalgic teen fantasy of freedom and friendship through computers. Dade "Zero Cool" Murphy (Jonny Lee Miller) was a child prodigy who has been banned from computer use since he hacked into New York Stock Exchange. Now a teen in New York City, he links up with a group of underground cyber-criminals/high-schoolers (including Angelina Jolie and Matthew Lillard) who uncover a corporate conspiracy to steal millions and cause untold environmental damage. Their only option? Hack the planet!
Why You Should See This Film
A blissful dream filled with skateboarding and teen romance, Hackers is a vision of a more optimistic view of what counter-culture might accomplish told through a slickly corporatised lens. Roger Ebert wisely advised audiences take the portrayal of actual hacking “approximately as seriously as the archeology in Indiana Jones”, so just focus on the sick fits, impeccable soundtrack and youthful glee and you're in for a good time.
