“I just want to live”
A rich, sprawling epic that hops nimbly between timelines, La bola negra takes on the last unfinished work by playwright Federico García Lorca. Set across nearly a century, its first story revolves around Carlos (Milo Queifes), a gay man from an upstanding family in 1932 Granada who finds himself ostracised from his community because of his identity. Years later during the Civil War Sebastian (musician-actor Guitarricadelafuente) faces the same problem, while in 2017 Alberto (Carlos González) is researching his past and uncovers this legacy of repression and desire.
“Profound...one of the best movies of the year”
“A generations-spanning study of war, sexuality, homophobia, and buried love”
“A must-see”
An unwieldy beast of a film, La bola negra operates in the fantastic Latin tradition of big stories and even bigger emotions. Unashamed of wearing its heart on its sleeve, this is a refreshingly open and authentic expression of feeling that trusts the audience to stay with it while setting up an extraordinary third act, delivering one of the most satisfying narrative payoffs in recent cinema.
