Overview

In his waning years, warlord Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai) divides his kingdom amongst his three sons. Taro (Akira Terao), is to lead the clan with Hidetora retaining the title of Great Lord, his younger sons Jiro (Jinpachi Ness) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryu) supporting their brother. After Saburo is exiled for criticising his father, greed, ambition and old grudges lead Taro and Jiro to turn on their father and one another, igniting a cataclysmic battle for the throne.

Why You Should See This Film

An epic adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear, mixed with legends of the daimyō Mōri Motonari, Ran is Kurosawa’s biggest and most expensive film, his final samurai epic and his favourite of his own films, it is widely considered one of the greatest films ever made. Shot in nationally treasured castles, hellish volcanic wastes and staggering alpine regions, Rans scenery and staggeringly colourful design cannot be understated as it dwarfs the characters and their squabbles. We’re also proud to be screening the behind the scenes look at Ran’s production, A.K. (1985) by filmmaker Chris Marker (Le Jetée, San Soleil).
