Overview

Bought as a last-minute Christmas gift from an antique store in Chinatown, Gizmo the Mogwai is reluctantly sold to Billy’s (Zach Galligan) well-meaning dad with the following provisos: 1. Never expose it to bright light 2. Never get it wet and 3. NEVER feed it after midnight. Of course, rules on Christmas go out the window. When one of the golden rules is broken, Gizmo spawns other Mogwais more mischievous than his cute, virtuous, furry little self. Gremlins wreak havoc across Billy’s house, terrorise his mum and girlfriend Kate (Phoebe Cates) and eventually the whole town. Holiday horror at its culty best.

Why See This Film

The only thing better than the scene where the Gremlins all happily watch Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in a cinema is Kate’s Scroogey character — ‘you say you hate Christmas and people treat you like you're a leper’ — which we learn the cause of in an epic monologue that ends in the classic line: ‘...and that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus.’
