“‘I love you’ can mean a lot of things”
The second in Gregg Araki's Teen Apocalypse Trilogy, The Doom Generation is a surreal and provocative take on the great American roadtrip. After a botched armed robbery Amy (Rose McGowan), Jordan (James Duval) and Xavier (Jonathon Schaech) are on the run through the dark heart of the country- having sex, cracking jokes, encountering fascism and eating Doritos with equal parts boredom and anger.
Audience Note: This film contains depiction of sexual assault
Bleakly funny and visually dazzling, this cult hit was Araki's breakthrough into the (semi) big time, featuring an incredible debut performance from McGowan as the Diet-Coke-and-speed-freak Amy Blue. Ciggies, late night convenience stores and random acts of senseless violence form the backdrop for a nihilistic and occasionally sweet teenage nightmare.
