In Jean-Luc Godard’s 1965 cult classic, secret agent Lemmy Caution (Eddie Constantine) is sent to a distant space city in order to locate a missing colleague and free the local citizens from their tyrannical ruler, an emotionless computer named Alpha 60. After enlisting the help of programmer Natacha von Braun (Anna Karina), Lemmy finds himself at the centre of a tale of old-fashioned machismo, espionage and unexpected romance. Blending Marxist critique with witty allusions to classic American noir and the writing of Jorge Luis Borges, Alphaville is a tongue-in-cheek exploration of technological dystopia and all the unbridled fun that comes with it.
Combining the genres of science fiction and film noir with effortless cool, Alphaville is an unforgettable highlight from the career of a celluloid master. In a sly twist, Godard eschewed typically 1960s futuristic props and sets— instead, the nighttime streets of gleaming, recently "modernised" Paris become Alphaville and televisions become supercomputers. Drawing on the panic that is often associated with technological advancements (from pistols to instant cameras), this film explores the dangers and delights of creativity, design, and emotional expression.
