“We can't go back”
Yurlu | Country is a powerful record of the final year in the life of the late Maitland Parker, activist and victim of asbestos exposure in Western Australia. With tailings spread over a 47,000 hectares, the exclusion zone around Wittenoom is the southern hemisphere's most contaminated site and contributes to Aboriginal people having the highest incidence of mesothelioma in the world. Director and five-time Walkley Award-winning journalist Yaara Bou Melhem was granted permission by the Banjima elder for his story to be told, from his childhood growing up on Country in the Pilbara to his passing, along with the battle of Traditional Owners for justice and the repair of their ancestral home.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that this film contains images and voices of deceased persons.
“Rich and immersive”
“Will break your heart”
Yurlu is a powerful film portraying an extraordinary man: a loving father and great-grandfather dedicated to passing down a legacy of culture and activism to future generations. Melhem goes beyond the talking-head confines of many message documentaries to showcase the tragedy of what has been lost, with huge swathes of breathtaking landscape rendered uninhabitable by greed and negligence, and the Banjima people's fight to have their land remediated. This stunning aerial photography is blended with oral storytelling, testimonies and archival footage to create a vital, inspirational work with hope for the future.
