Overview

Based on the beloved S.E. Hinton novel of the same name, The Outsiders focuses on a group of teens in 1965 Tulsa, Oklahoma. The working class 'Greasers' look like Cry Baby rockabillies and frequently spar with rich kid 'Socs' (pronounced 'soashes'). One night a heavy duty fight occurs after the Socs see two of their lady friends at the drive-in talking to Greasers Johnny, Ponyboy, and Two-Bit. Ponyboy and Johnny leave town until the heat dies down, and the film follows the pair's meandering journey, their soul-searching and their bonding.

Why See This Film

The film succeeds at being sentimental and nostalgic without being schmaltzy or simplistic, creating something rare: a teen drama that's genuinely affecting and light on cringe, even if you're over 18. Features a pretty amazing cast of young actors destined for greatness, including Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Diane Lane, Ralph Macchio and C. Thomas Howell. This extended "Complete Novel" edition includes over 20 minutes of additional scenes that Coppola shot but had to leave out of the theatrical edition because of studio concerns about the runtime, giving the film space to breathe and a deeper look into the complex adolescent friendships of the leads.
