Overview

Acclaimed screenwriter and critic Nick Pinkerton (The Sweet East) presents a rare, never to be repeated screening of Jim Sharman's (The Rocky Horror Picture Show) underappreciated ultra-pitch-black, Sydney-set satire, The Night, The Prowler— raw, live, and in-person. In a wealthy Sydney suburb, a neurotic mother oppresses her adult daughter Felicity, soon to be married to a rising young diplomat. When Felicity claims she has been assaulted by a prowler, the family's façade of social nicety starts to crumble. Felicity herself responds to the crisis by gradually transforming from victimhood to liberation as a prowler herself, clad in black leather and stalking the streets of Sydney at night looking for revenge.

Why You Should See This Film

A wickedly funny and subversive collaboration between Nobel Prize-winning author Patrick White and one of Australia's most adventurous film directors, The Night, The Prowler is a savage black comedy of a dysfunctional middle-class family, laced with unexpected touches of surrealism. It also features an incredible turn from Ruth Cracknell as a nightmarish Mommy-Dearest in full on John Waters mode. Our special Guest Presenter Nick Pinkerton is a Cincinnati-born, Brooklyn-based writer-director focused on moving-image-based art. His writing has appeared in Film Comment, Sight & Sound, Artforum, frieze, Reverse Shot, 4Columns, Harper’s, the Baffler, and the Village Voice (among other publications, his full length book on Tsai Ming-liang's Goodbye Dragon Inn is essential reading).
