“Time repeats every two minutes!”
Europe Kikaku, the team behind the worldwide smash hit Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes, return with another ingeniously conceived two-minute time looping comedy. Nestled in the forest valley village of Kibune, guests and hotel staff enjoy a sleepy winter in an old ryokan. Mikoto (Riko Fujitani), a waitress, stands by the river then tends to her duties. Two minutes later she is suddenly back by the river. Everyone else also reverts to where they were two minutes ago, and so does their food. In a series of exceptionally choreographed long takes Mikoto and the rest of the town try to quell chaos and get to the bottom of their looping predicament, only to start all over again every two minutes.
“Ingenious... a loop worth getting lost in”
“Tender time loop fun”
They did it again! Just when you thought the Groundhog Day time-loop concept was exhausted, director Junta Yamaguchi, screenwriter Makoto Ueda (Summer Time Machine Blues) and the wonderful cast of filmmaking / theatre troupe Europe Kikaku have struck gold once more with this low budget and deceptively simple yet thrillingly complex little charmer. Playing out in countless permutations of the same tracking shot, River gradually orients you around this gorgeous village, its colourful inhabitants and an ever evolving puzzle that is sure to sweep you off your feet, two minutes at a time.
