Overview

Agathe (Camille Rutherford, Anatomy of a Fall) is a struggling romance author stuck living with her sister and battling a severe case of writer’s block. Working in the famous Parisian bookshop “Shakespeare & Co”, surrounded by stories of others’ desires and adventures, she longs for a romance like the ones in her favourite novels, although her days are brightened by an undeniable chemistry with her best friend/co-worker Félix (Pablo Pauly). When Agathe is unexpectedly invited to a prestigious Jane Austen residency in England, she finds herself living her dream in a luxurious manor ripped directly from the pages of one of her idol's stories. Falling headlong into a romantic triangle, she becomes acquainted with the handsome yet headstrong Oliver (Charlie Anson, Downton Abbey)—Jane Austen’s great-great-great-great nephew—and must decide for herself what she truly wants.

“There’s a salve-like quality to Jane Austen Wrecked My Life, a balm for any battered romantic’s soul”

Los Angeles Times

“A romantic comedy for the quiet, thoughtful lovers who yearn for the sincerity of the past”

RogerEbert.com

“Camille Rutherford is terrific...witty, warm, keenly observant, a bit clumsy and Bridget Jones-ish, but never, not even for a moment, cringy”

The Guardian

Why See This Film

A passing familiarity with the works of Austen won't hurt, but writer/director Laura Piani's debut feature has something for anyone who enjoys a little romantic fantasy tempered with reality. Jane Austen Wrecks My Life relocates some of the iconic author's most pressing concerns to the 21st Century where alongside modern love are the same old concerns: autonomy, self-determination and finding one's own voice. Rutherford’s portrayal of a heroine out of time trying to connect with the world around her is one of nuance, unafraid to brush up against something existential and a little sad, and ultimately makes Jane Austen Wrecks My Life a satisfying journey of discovery.
