New 4K Restoration
Stunningly photographed and pulsatingly scored, Andrzej Żuławski’s head-spinning horror opus Possession stars Sam Neill beside Isabelle Adjani in a Cannes Best Actress-winning role. Mark (Neill), a spy, returns from an assignment abroad to his West Berlin apartment to find his wife Anna (Adjani) in a strange state, requesting a divorce as their young son watches on. Mark obsesses over Anna’s whereabouts, soon discovering she has been leading an affair with the eccentric Heinrich (Heinz Bennent). Meanwhile, Anna is deliriously drawn to a derelict building to nurture an unspeakable evil.
“Essential viewing”
“A singular work of art that deserves consideration as one of the supreme horror films of its era”
“Virtuosic. Zulawski’s most fully realized effort”
“One of the most viscerally vivid portraits of a disintegrating relationship yet committed to film”
Initially banned in the UK and heavily censored in the US before amassing a cult following, we’re pleased to present Possession in a striking new 4K restoration. One of the most brilliant and twisted of all psychological horror films, Possession is a convulsive cocktail of cold war desolation and marital mania with a dash of otherworldly monstrosity. Written and shot in the wake of Żuławski’s own turbulent divorce and exile from Poland, this is easily one of the messiest, strangest and most personal break-up films – often likened to Cronenberg’s The Brood (1979).
