“Don’t be afraid, there is nothing to fear.”
Adapted from Miyazaki’s original manga, Nausicaä is a post-post-apocalyptic fantasy inspired by the work of Tolkien, LeGuin and Frank Herbert. Teen princess Nausicaä, from the Valley of the Wind, survives in the far-future wilderness world that remains after a catastrophic war has devastated the planet. When an aircraft carrying a dangerous bioweapon crashlands nearby she finds herself drawn into the conflict between kingdoms, rallying survivors and learning from seasoned warriors. Nausicaä discovers she is able to communicate with the massive creatures that roam the forests, and must use her newfound skills and wisdom to try to bring peace and find a way for humanity to survive in harmony with the earth.
Forty years on from its release Nausicaä still regularly tops best-of-all-time lists of animated films and manages to feel fresh and relevant. The stunning visuals and intricate character design (notably thanks to one Hideaki Anno, whose Neon Genesis Evangelion you may have heard of) were partly inspired by the artist Mœbius and its ambitious scope and world building influenced everything from contemporary science fantasy to the Final Fantasy series. An incredible achievement on its own and a blueprint for the concepts Miyazaki would explore throughout his life: the resilience of youth, the corrupting nature of war and the delicate balance between humans and their environment.
Please note this film will screen in Japanese with English subtitles.
