Performance artist Sereima Adimate (aka Stelly G), Kiki Oner and film collective Garden Reflexxx have created a truly unique film exploring memory, friendship and the possibility of going home again. Stelly and Kiki return to the largest island in Fiji, Viti Levu, for the first time together as adults. We hear stories from the residents, woven together with journal entries as the best friends reckon with concepts of heritage and belonging in a poetic visual travelogue. Fresh from its world premiere at Sydney Festival, Mood Ring is the first feature directed by a Fijian woman and an incredible debut from one of the most compelling new voices in film.
Mood Ring grew from a 2021 brainstorming session around the idea of "first times", eventually growing into a community-funded journey through diasporic experiences under the ineffable shadow of taboo. As a performance artist and curator Stelly G is already a legend, and her work with Kiki Oner and Garden Reflexxx has been based in a realistic film movement— beyond the art school legacy of inherited funding and towards an egalitarian mode of community work. The grief of displacement and the joy of expression meld with humour and tremendous energy to create a truly one of a kind film.
