Overview

Based on the award-winning novel by Eiko Kadono, Kiki’s Delivery Service follows a young girl who moves to the big city so she can complete her training as a witch. Equipped with flying broomstick and cat familiar she naturally starts a baked-goods delivery business and soon finds herself rushed off her feet. Kiki tries her best to juggle the pressures of the gig economy, but when her ability to use magic is jeopardised she realises that doing what you thought you always wanted may not be as satisfying as you dreamed.

Why See This Film

This was the first box office hit for Miyazaki both in Japan and globally, which speaks to the resonance of this coming-of-age film about losing and finding your place in the grand scheme of things. The world of Kiki’s Delivery Service may seem a little smaller in size, but the city and its inhabitants are so richly rendered it feels as though infinite stories are just on the edge of frame. Grounded and relatable without being preachy, Kiki’s growth in the face of adversity speaks to anyone who has crash landed and had to pick themselves back up again.

Please note this film will screen in Japanese with English subtitles.
