From acclaimed Macedonian Australian filmmaker Goran Stolevski (Of An Age, You Won't Be Alone) comes a story exploring the universal truths of family, both the ones we’re born into and the ones we find for ourselves. Dita (Anamaria Marinca) never wanted to be a mother, but circumstances force her to raise her girlfriend’s two daughters; tiny troublemaker Mia (Dżada Selim) and rebellious teen Vanesa (Mia Mustafi). Joining the fray is Dita's longtime friend Toni (Vladimir Tintor) and his younger housemate and former one-night-stand Ali (Samson Selim) who help create a faux-nuclear appearance to maintain the family in the eyes of the law. A battle of wills ensues as the unlikely family butt heads and fight to stay together.
Winner: Queer Lion
“A deft and unsentimental family drama about an unlikely tribe of misfits trying to make a place for themselves”
“There are many greatly moving moments in the director’s third feature, all connected by a heartfelt understanding of the value of nurturing companionship”
“A vital, febrile multi-character study that further confirms writer-director Goran Stolevski as a talent to be reckoned with”
Winner of the Queer Lion at Venice, as well as being Macedonia’s entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards, Housekeeping for Beginners continues a triumphant streak for filmmaker Goran Stolevski. Bursting with energy and heart, this frenetic and tender third feature portraits a group of diverse marginalised people (played by an electrifying cast), all competing for survival in this world, coming together as a family. Excelling beyond melodrama and farce for realism and honesty, Housekeeping for Beginners recognises the complexity of people, the messiness of families and the uniting power of love.
