Overview

A journey back to a time when Centrelink and a few cash-in-hand jobs could support the white Australian middle class rumspringa of sharehousing, He Died with a Felafel in His Hand remains a warm grunge-lit look back at everything we lost. Author stand-in Danny (Noah Taylor, ethereal) is a writer shuffling through various sharehouses and situationships from Brisbane to Melbourne to Sydney, encountering housemates and cult members alike while he struggles to make a living as a writer.

Why You Should See This Film

Based on the autobiographical novel by Brissy's own John Birmingham, He Died with a Felafel in His Hand is fascinating as a darkly comic reflection on the extended coming-of-age experienced by inner-city Australian aspirational artists, a phase that seemingly lasts well into one's thirties. Told through vignettes and anecdotes, this is a portrait of a generation at war with landlords and authority figures alongside their own listlessness.
